Reasons to attend and to not attend Southern Methodist University
To Attend
- “I didn’t realize that being in Dallas would be such a huge plus. I love all the opportunities that Dallas has to offer.”
- “The SMU alumni network is huge.”
- “SMU presents so many opportunities socially and professionally for everything that you could possibly want and has something for everyone. If you’re willing to put yourself out there, SMU will help you do what you want.”
- “The students are very involved and very driven. Everybody is involved with a charity or works as an ambassador for a company or is doing something on top of schoolwork.”
- “They make the freshman transition super easy. We do this thing called Corral where we go explore Dallas and that is where I met a lot of really good friends. We then have an overnight retreat in cabins and you get really close to the people in your dorm. The transition was really easy because you get in a groove after spending a whole week with those people.”
To Not Attend
- “SMU is very focused on the business school and is not as focused on the other schools because it feels like Cox is the school’s pride and joy. If you don’t want to do business, maybe SMU isn’t a good choice.”
- “There’s the reputation that it’s a school of rich kids, and it can be that way but most people aren’t. if you’re uncomfortable with that kind of culture or being around people of a different background than you, SMU may not be for you.” [23%of students come from families in the top 1% socioeconomically.]
- “It gets really hot.”
- “The lack of diversity.” [About 64% of students are White.]
